Men’s Bikini Swimwear vs Swim Briefs: Which Cut Is Right for You?

Updated October 2026

The short version

  • The side seam is the tell. A men's bikini brief has narrow sides, often just a band at the hip. A swim brief has a proper panel there, usually about 7 cm (2.75 in) or more.
  • Bikini cuts tend to sit lower and show more at the back. Swim briefs cover a little more and look a little more classic.
  • If you like the low, confident look but want a brief that feels easy to wear all day, choose a low-rise swim brief.

"Bikini" sounds like a women's word, but in men's swimwear it's a cut, and plenty of men search for it. Here's what it means, how it differs from a standard swim brief, and how to choose.

What is men's bikini swimwear?

A men's bikini swim brief is a brief cut down to the minimum at the sides. The front is usually a shaped pouch, the leg openings are cut high and the back is smaller than a regular brief's. On some styles the sides are just a narrow band of waistband. The idea is maximum leg and hip and minimum tan lines.

What is a swim brief?

A swim brief is the cut most people mean when they say "Speedo" (a brand name). It's a fitted brief with a full front, a seat that covers and a side seam with real width. Training briefs sit at the natural waist. Fashion briefs, like ours, sit lower on the hips.

Bikini vs swim brief: side by side

Men's bikini swim brief Low-rise swim brief Training swim brief

Rise Low Low Mid, at the natural waist
Back coverage Minimal to moderate Moderate Full
Front Pouch Usually a shaped or contoured pouch Flat or lightly shaped
Best for Tanning, beach clubs, pool parties Beach, pool, vacation, all day Laps and training
Feels like A statement Confident but easy Sporty

Side measurements vary by brand and size. Always check a brand's own chart.

How to choose

Go for a bikini cut if:

  • You want the fewest tan lines and the most leg showing
  • It's for a beach club, a gay beach or a pool party where smaller cuts are normal
  • You're already comfortable in briefs and want to go a step further

Go for a low-rise swim brief if:

  • You like the low line but want more at the sides and back
  • You want one brief that works for the beach, the pool and a long lunch by the water
  • It's your first brief, or you're moving up from trunks. Our first-timer's plan helps here

Go for a training brief if: you swim laps.

Men's bikini swimwear with a pouch

Most bikini cuts have a pouch, because there's so little coverage anywhere else. A shaped front holds its form instead of lying flat. Swim briefs vary more: training briefs are often flat-fronted, while fashion briefs usually have a contoured pouch. If shape at the front matters to you, check the product photos from the side.

Sizing tip

With less coverage, a bikini cut shows every sizing mistake. Too small and it cuts in at the hip; too big and the sides fold. Whichever cut you buy, measure a brief you already own, laid flat across the waistband, and compare it with the brand's half-waist chart. For ours, see the size guide.

A men's swim brief with very narrow sides, a high leg, a shaped pouch and reduced back coverage. It's the most minimal cut short of a swim thong.

Yes, especially at gay beaches, resorts, beach clubs and pool parties. It's even more common in Europe, Brazil and Australia.
