How Should Men’s Swim Briefs Fit? The 30-Second Test

The short version

  • Snug, not tight. A good swim brief stays put when you move and leaves no marks.

  • Check four places: waistband, front, leg openings, seat.

  • Judge the fit dry. Expect a touch more give in the water.

  • Between sizes? Size down.

So, how should men's swim briefs fit? Snugly, everywhere, with nothing pinching and nothing moving. That sounds simple, yet most men who decide "briefs just aren't for me" have never worn one that actually fits. They bought a size up, the way they would with board shorts. The brief sagged, shifted when they climbed out of the pool, and looked like a mistake. The cut wasn't the problem. The size was.

Here's the point-by-point version, and a test you can do in your bedroom before you ever step onto a pool deck.

Snug is not the same as tight

A swim brief sits closer to your body than anything else you own. The support, the shape and that clean line all depend on gentle, even tension. That's snug.

Tight is something else. Tight digs in, leaves red lines and makes you think about your swimwear all afternoon. The goal is a brief you forget you're wearing. Use this rule of thumb:

  • If you can feel it working, it's too small.

  • If you can feel it moving, it's too big.

The four places to check

1. The waistband

It should lie flat all the way round: no rolling at the top, no digging in at the front, no gap at the small of your back. A low-rise brief like the Mandate Swim Brief sits below the hip bone, so the waistband has to grip a little more than a mid-rise one would. You should be able to slide two fingers underneath comfortably. If your whole hand fits, size down.

2. The front

A well-cut brief holds and shapes. It doesn't flatten. That's why ours has a contoured pouch: support without squashing. If the front feels like it's pressing rather than holding, or it looks loose and baggy, the size is wrong, not the style.

3. The leg openings

They should follow the crease at the top of your thigh and stop there. A red ridge in the skin means too small. A gap you could slide a finger into when you sit down means too big.

4. The seat

The back should sit smooth across your glutes, without bunching in the middle or creeping up into a wedge. A little movement after a dive is normal. Re-adjusting every five minutes isn't.

Do the 30-second test

Put the brief on, dry, and give it half a minute:

  1. Bend forward as if you're touching your toes.

  2. Squat down low and stand back up.

  3. Lift one knee to your chest, then the other.

  4. Walk across the room and sit on the edge of the bed.

Nothing should roll, gape, ride up or need a hand to fix it. If you catch yourself adjusting in the first thirty seconds, it'll be ten times worse after an hour at the beach.

Wet versus dry

Most swimwear relaxes slightly in the water and recovers as it dries. That's normal, and it's why you judge fit dry and expect a touch more give once you're swimming. A brief that's only just snug on land can feel loose in the pool. A brief that's snug on land feels right.

What helps it keep its shape over time? Rinse it in cool, fresh water after every swim, wash it gently, and lay it flat to dry in the shade. Wringing, tumble-drying and leaving it balled up wet in a bag are what wear swimwear out.

How to pick your Mandate size

Our chart measures the garment itself, laid flat, in centimeters. The most useful number is the half-waist: the width of the waistband from side to side.

Mandate Swim Brief: garment measurements in cm
Measurement (garment, flat) S M L
Half-waist (side to side)33 cm36 cm39 cm
Front rise25 cm26 cm27 cm
Back rise27 cm28 cm29 cm
Waistband height3.5 cm3.5 cm3.5 cm

The garment-to-garment method (the most reliable): take a brief or a pair of underwear that already fits you the way you like, lay it flat, measure straight across the waistband, and choose the Mandate size closest to that number. It beats body measurements because it already reflects how you like things to fit.

Between two sizes? Go down. Swim briefs are meant to be snug, and they give a little in the water. The one exception: if you prefer a more relaxed feel and accept a bit more movement, size up.

Signs it's too small

  • Red marks on your skin when you take it off

  • Fabric that looks thin or strained when stretched

  • A waistband that rolls down instead of lying flat

  • Leg openings that cut in when you walk

Signs it's too big

  • It shifts when you move or climb out of the pool

  • The front looks baggy rather than shaped

  • The leg openings gape when you sit

  • You keep hitching it up

Got it wrong? You've got options

Fit is personal, and we'd rather you have the right size than the wrong one. Unworn items can be returned within 30 days, so if the size isn't right, swap it. Try the brief on dry, over underwear, so it stays unworn if you need to send it back.

The honest version

A well-fitting swim brief is the most comfortable thing you can wear in the water. There's less fabric to drag, less to dry, and nothing bunching up while you lie in the sun. Once you've worn one that fits, you stop thinking about your swimwear completely. That's the whole point.

Ready? Pick your color in the Mandate Swim Brief (statement red or classic black). Or, if you already know your size, grab the Swim Brief Duo: 2 for $69.98 and have one to wear while the other dries. Still nervous about the first wear? Read how to wear swim briefs confidently.

FAQ

Should men's swim briefs be tight? Snug, not tight. They should stay in place when you move and leave no marks on your skin.

Should I size up or down in swim briefs? If you're between sizes, size down. Sizing up is the most common mistake, because swim briefs relax slightly in the water.

How do I measure for a swim brief? Lay a brief you already like flat, measure straight across the waistband, and compare it with the half-waist on our size chart: 33 cm (S), 36 cm (M) or 39 cm (L).

Do swim briefs stretch out over time? Most swimwear relaxes slightly when wet and recovers when dry. Rinsing in fresh water after each swim and drying flat in the shade help it keep its shape.

What if my Mandate brief doesn't fit? Unworn items can be returned within 30 days. Try it on dry, over underwear, so you can still return it.
