Best Swim Briefs Under $40 for Men (2026)

Updated October 2026

The short version

  • You can get a good swim brief for $40 or less. The question is what it's built for: lap training, or the beach and the pool deck.
  • For laps on a budget, Speedo's Endurance+ Brief lists at $26 and TYR's Durafast Elite brief at $39.99.
  • For the beach, look at aussieBum, JJ Malibu or the Mandate Swim Brief ($39.99, or about $33 each in a Trio).

A lot of men's swim briefs now cost $80 or more. That's fine if you want a designer label, but you don't need to spend that much to look good at the pool. We checked list prices on each brand's own US site (or its Amazon listing) in October 2026 and kept only briefs that list at $40 or less. Full disclosure: we make one of them, the Mandate Swim Brief, so we've stuck to facts you can check yourself.

How we picked

We kept this simple and checkable:

  • List price of $40 or less on the brand's US site or its Amazon listing, in October 2026. Sale prices come and go, so we don't count them in the table. Where a brand's list price is higher but most styles are on sale, we say so separately.
  • What each brief is for, in plain words based on the brand's own product copy: training, beach, pool, vacation.
  • Nothing we can't verify. We didn't rate fabric, durability or performance for any brand, including ours.

Which one should you buy?

Start with what you'll actually do in it.

  • If you swim laps a few times a week, pick a training brief: the Speedo Endurance+ Brief at $26 or the TYR Durafast Elite brief. That's exactly what they're made for.
  • If you want lots of prints to choose from, look at JJ Malibu or aussieBum.
  • If you want a scrunch-back cut, JJ Malibu's Classic Scrunch-Butt brief is $35.
  • If you want a low-rise brief in a solid red or black for vacations and pool days, that's the Mandate Swim Brief at $39.99.
  • If you need two or three, buying a set brings the price per brief down: the Mandate Swim Brief Duo is $69.98 (about $35 each) and the Swim Brief Trio is $99.97 (about $33 each).

On sale, not in the table: Jack Adams lists most of its swim briefs at $54 to $78, but in October 2026 many styles were on sale for $20.50 to $33.50 on its US site. If you don't mind waiting for a sale, it's worth a look.

Above $40: if you want a designer label, Seaman Swim's The Essential is $79.95 and Charlie by Matthew Zink's briefs start at $85. Our best men's swim briefs of 2026 comparison covers those too.

Lap brief or lifestyle brief?

At this price, the biggest difference isn't the brand. It's the job the brief was made for.

  • Training briefs are cut for the pool lane. Expect a drawcord, a mid rise and a firm fit, often in team colors.
  • Lifestyle briefs are cut to look good when you're standing up: usually a lower rise, a shaped front and colors chosen for the pool deck rather than the lane line.

Neither is better. They're built for different afternoons. If you're switching from a training brief, our guide to Speedo alternatives explains the difference and how to convert waist sizes.

Five checks before you buy a cheaper brief

A low price only pays off if the brief fits and suits how you'll wear it.

  1. Check the size chart, not just the label. Brands size differently: some by waist inches, some by S, M and L. Lay a brief that fits you well flat, measure straight across the waistband and compare. Our swim brief size guide shows how.
  2. Look at the rise and the side height. Lower and narrower reads more fashion; higher and wider reads more sport.
  3. Look at the back view. Coverage varies a lot between brands and cuts.
  4. Read the returns policy. Swimwear returns usually come with conditions, such as unworn with tags on.
  5. Work out the price per brief. If you'll want two or three anyway, a set can beat a single on sale.

We make the Mandate brief

Here's exactly what it is. The Mandate Swim Brief is a low-rise men's swim brief with a contoured pouch and a flat waistband, in red or black, sizes S, M and L, for $39.99. The side seam is 9.5 to 10.5 cm (about 4 inches), depending on size. Two cost $69.98 and three cost $99.97, in any mix of red and black. Orders ship from California.

Can't decide on a color? Black is the easy first brief, and our guide to red swim briefs covers when red is the better call.

FAQ

What are the best swim briefs under $40?

It depends on what you'll do in them. For lap training, the Speedo Endurance+ Brief ($26 list) and the TYR Durafast Elite brief ($39.99 list on several colorways) are built for the pool. For the beach and vacations, aussieBum, JJ Malibu and the Mandate Swim Brief ($39.99) all list at $40 or less, as of October 2026.

How much do men's swim briefs cost?

In October 2026, list prices ran from about $25 for entry-level briefs to $80 and up for designer labels. Many brands run frequent sales, so check each brand's site before you buy.

Is it cheaper to buy swim briefs in a pack?

Often, yes. The Mandate Swim Brief is $39.99 on its own, $69.98 for two (about $35 each) and $99.97 for three (about $33 each).

Can I wear a lap swimming brief to the beach?

Yes. A training brief works anywhere you swim. Lifestyle briefs are usually cut lower with a more shaped front, which some men prefer for lounging and vacations.

What should I check before buying a cheap swim brief?

Check the size chart against a brief that already fits you, look at the rise and the back view, read the returns policy and work out the price per brief if you need more than one.
